LA’s favorite flower alchemist and pioneer of the sound she calls “popera” stole the shine from the stars at Hotel Cafe last night. If you think my praise too high, you’ve clearly never seen or heard the ephemeral songstress. Easily one of Angel City’s premier standout artists in the sea of talented indie singer-songwriters our city contains, Elizaveta’s music transcends mere noise and sound. She is that rare gem one finds in the arts on occasion, the kind whose creations exalt humanity to something better than we are on our own, and whose work is not just a thing of beauty in and of itself, which it is, but also a bit of magic with the power to heal the broken pieces of our fragile human nature. That’s a great thing, seeing as we all seem to have so many these days, especially in the City of Angels.
Though a few of the songs were dedicated to the audience present last night, in many ways her sets true dedication was to the Santa Ana Winds, which raged unusually high this year, reaching speeds of 120 mph for the first time in a decade, seemingly for the occasion. Though there were a few older songs like the opener Snow In Venice, the recently familiar Dreamer, or the Breakfast With Chopin staple Orion, the nights set was mostly new songs that hadn’t been played publicly before, including Your Waltz and a song she wrote just the night before during a power outage due to those mighty Santa Ana’s.
According to Elizaveta, she “seek[s] to sing in a manner which would create within your chest a safe, magical, truthful place of power beyond the slow burn of stars.” Well if that is your mission, than mission accomplished. And then some. When your girl in music listens, her heart-space fills with such grounded freedom that all she faces that day/week/year/life seems so utterly do-able, and like a miracle tonic, all that ails us seems to fade. So LA, meet Elizaveta, Good Apothecary. Her new album, Beatrix Runs, which will once again elevate her art form, is due out January 24, 2012.
